Want the weird off-road Shelby Mustang from 'The Thomas Crown Affair', but newer?

If that sentence made even the slightest bit of sense to you, then good news! Here's a new weird, off-road Shelby Mustang

Published: 10 Mar 2025

Though TopGear.com holds a special place in its heart for Pierce Brosnan and his wide-ranging body of work, one specific bit of his work has slipped through the net. That being the weird, off-road Shelby Mustang he drove for a bit in The Thomas Crown Affair.

Turns out, a German tuner wants to pay homage to this weird, off-road Shelby Mustang Mr Brosnan drove for a bit, by transforming it into a modern weird, off-road Shelby Mustang.

This is it. You will notice it is only a render, but the tuner responsible – Loder1899 – assures us if enough people are excited, It Shall Be Built.

Clearly, it’s a new Shelby GT350, and if that’s the base Loder1899 lands upon, you’re looking at the slightly scary end of 820bhp from a very supercharged version of Ford’s indomitable 5.0-litre Coyote V8.

However, where the regular Shelby GT350 gets lowered springs and 20in forged alloys, Loder’s take gets… the opposite. It only says the new TC ‘Stang is given “a specially engineered suspension system” to “ensure an impressive appearance and outstanding driving performance, both on and off the road”.

For that, read: shiny, bouncier dampers, new springs, bushes and a considerable amount of additional beef to hold it all together.

And where the regular Shelby GT350 gets… a roof, this one does not. All the better to hear that V8, no doubt. There's the same weird, rear-mounted roll-bar as seen on Brosnan’s 1968 film car, replicated here as “a tribute to classic rally vehicles and a bold statement for true individualists”. So there’s that.

There’s also a set of rally-style spotlights sitting on top of the roll bar and on the nose, knobbly tyres, flared arches, a boot-mounted spare wheel, and a rather excellent green-over-tan colourway. Yes, it is weird. Yes, it is also strangely quite excellent.

We’re sure Mr Brosnan would agree, and if you do too, give Loder a shout. “Our goal was to revive the legendary Thomas Crown Mustang in an entirely new dimension," said boss of Loder1899, Maximilian Loder. "We are confident that this concept vehicle will excite enthusiasts. If the response is positive, we will bring it into production."
