Supercharge your Mazda MX-5

Published: 01 Dec 2010

The Mazda MX-5 is like a sausage roll; honest, tasty and with just the right amount of meat. But as with most things, more is better.

And we've always trumpeted the MX-5 as an excellent driver's car that could always use a little more... oomph. So step into the fray BBR.

The Northamptonshire-based tuner has teamed up with Cosworth to bring you a supercharger for your Mk3 MX-5, upping power from 160bhp to a rather dandy 235bhp and 190lb ft of pulling power.

This, as you can guess, is quite a lot more. No word on acceleration, but the boost is said to be ‘progressive' and won't upset the ‘delicate dynamic balance' of the standard setup. The 160bhp factory-fresh Mazda does 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds, so you can expect at least a sub-seven second dash with the supercharger.

It costs £4,995 fully fitted, and for your money you get Cosworth inlet manifold housing, an Eaton 4th gen MP62 supercharger, intercooler, high flow injectors, a high flow air box and filter, competition hoses and fixings, a BBR ECU with 3D mapping and, most importantly, big BBR and Cosworth badges.

There's also a turbo kit for Mk1 and Mk2 MX-5s, taking power from 150bhp to 220bhp, via a Garrett GT25 turbo, and associated high performance components. This power also weighs in at £4,995 fully fitted, or you can do it yourself for £3,995. Just remember to keep your chubby fingers somewhere safe, like behind a hammer.

Click here if you're interested, and tell us below if you think adding more power to the MX-5 is a) blasphemous, or b) better late than NEVER.
