Mansory’s Defender Black Edition is perfect for shy and retiring drivers
Blend into the background with this subtly modified, V8-engined Defender 90
Mansory has unveiled a new ‘complete vehicle conversion’ for the supercharged V8-engined Land Rover Defender 90, and it is the definition of understated.
No wait, we must have got our wires crossed somewhere. The Mansory Defender Black Edition is one of the most garish things we’ve seen this year.
Heck, just look at that bodykit. This is Mansory so literally everything is carbon fibre, including the multi-level front lip spoiler, the bonnet, the widened arches, the side skirts, the mirror caps, the housing for the roof-mounted lights, the rear diffuser, all of the rear body panels and the split rear spoiler thing. Yep, it’s a carbon rear spoiler on a Land Rover Defender.
There’s a power boost to match the looks, with the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 getting bumped from a paltry 518bhp up to a much more acceptable 641bhp. That’s thanks to “various modifications to the drivetrain", plus a new quad-exit exhaust system. There’s 642lb ft of torque as a result too, with the 0-62mph time dropping to 4.7 seconds and the top speed increasing to 155mph. Not bad for a spangly brick on wheels.
And boy are they big wheels. In fact, Mansory has managed to fit the Defender with 24-inch alloys and properly low-profile tyres. Maybe don’t try off-roading in this particular Land Rover, yeah?
We should talk about that interior too. A huge amount of carbon has managed to sneak in there and Mansory reckons you can spec pretty much any colour, any type of leather and any style of quilting. Presumably you can ask not to have the steering wheel with shift lights and the jazzy Mansory logo on the roof too.
Just 10 examples of the Black Edition will be built for those who think the standard Defender V8 is far too discreet, but we’re told that Mansory also has plans for the longer Defender 110. One can only imagine what'd happen if it eventually gets round to the monstrous 130.
