Hyundai Genesis Coupe news - Rhys' pieces - 2008

Published: 05 Nov 2008

Hyundai has already told us we won’t be getting the Genesis Coupe. And because we’re a good-natured lot, we took it on the chin. But now they’ve gone and kicked sand in our faces – revealing a racing version, at the SEMA show. And no, we won’t be getting this either.

Which is a shame. Prepared by Rhys Millen Racing, it’s properly hardcore. Carbon fibre body, big turbocharger, a full roll cage, sequential gearbox and a full fire extinguisher system – it’s got all of those.

And more... The idea was to create a car versatile enough to run at race events, drift events and even at the Pikes Peak Hillclimb. This is that car. And it’s been built by the right people – Rhys is the son of Rod, who’s a legend on the notorious Colorado mountain.

They’ll have the drift thing covered too – Rhys drives for the Red Bull Drift Team in the States, so he knows a little bit about going sideways. While drinking nasty, caffeine-based chemicals from a can, presumably.

So obviously, it’ll be rear-wheel-drive, and that big turbo will squeeze a load more horsepower from Hyundai’s 2-litre unit. No official performance figures have been released, but we’re guessing at around 300bhp. That’d be nice.

We just wish we could buy one. Sob.

For more SEMA stuff, look at the Camaro Black, the Camaro GS Racecar Concapt and the Toyota Yaris Club Speedster.
