Gunther Werks will only ever restomod 993-gen Porsche 911s
The ‘best version of the 911’ is the team’s focus, and the latest focus is 700bhp of orange fury
American restomodder Gunther Werks recently unveiled – or should that be ‘unleashed’ – 700bhp worth of deep orange fury in the shape of Project Tornado. It’s the latest 993-salvo in an armoury made up exclusively of 993-generation Porsche 911s.
And that won’t change anytime soon. “The beauty about the 993-era is it’s the last air-cooled version,” a spokesperson told TG. “We like to say the best version of the 911. That’s our main focus for now, and I don’t foresee that changing anytime soon.”
So they won’t go wading into the increasingly busy waters of the 964-era 911, where a particularly Big Fish currently resides. “Singer is in a different kind of era and focus,” GW said. “A lot of people have been asking us about that [what makes GW different to Singer], and they’re in a different business. They’ve got a different type of customer.”
GW’s focus was more on motorsport and function over form. “The good thing about our car is it’s extremely dual purpose.” Dual purpose, sure, but mostly fast. Each 993 built is a client-supplied car that gets torn right back down to its bare chassis and built back up to spec.
Project Tornado’s spec is quite something, too. Plumbed into the back is a Rothsport Racing 4.0-litre twin-turbo boxer engine complete with liquid charged cooling and a Motec ECU. There’s 600bhp in its standard tune, but a whopping 700bhp in the track mode, and it's all sent to the rear wheels alone via a six-speed manual transmission.
“This car’s obviously got a widened front track with quite a big contact patch – 11in wide wheels on the front, 13in at the back – so these things really turn in,” GW said. No doubt helped by a suite of carbon fibre body panels designed to optimise the engine’s cooling and the car’s downforce and shed over 200kg from the original platform.
There’s a vented bonnet, larger intakes on the front, widened skirts, vented wings, a ‘dual bubble’ carbon fibre roof, extended diffuser and of course a fully functional aero-optimised rear wing. Lots of carbon fibre inside, too, along with the obligatory motorsport touches like carbon fibre buckets and racing harnesses.
Only 75 are being built and GW told TG only a few allocations remain – all the other cars have been accounted for. And while no lap time was given for this, we’re told it’s “way faster” than the Gunther Werks Speedster.
Price? Well, if you have to ask…
