Do you like this Porsche 911-inspired Golf GTI RS Concept?

Does wideness plus roof-box equal excellence?

Porsche 911-inspired Golf GTI
  • What’s that?

A Volkswagen Golf like you’ve never seen before. It’s called the GTI RS Concept, and as you’ll have noticed, its creator was plainly inspired by the work of another German manufacturer. What Porsche’s lawyers have to say about the GTI RS script down the flanks remains to be seen, but hey, it’s all in-group.

  • Wait, this is an official VW thing?

Sort of. While it looks like something you’d see at the annual Worthersee shindig (which starts this Wednesday, incidentally. We’ll be there), it’s actually on display at the ‘SOWO European Experience’ show in Savannah, Georgia. VW USA says its “concept car fleet is inspired by the diverse interests of the brand’s enthusiasts”. There are four others – none as interesting as this, which is the work of Vossen Wheels Creative Director Sam Dobbins.

  • What’s Mr Dobbins done to his car, then?

Well, it started out as a regular three-door Golf GTI. It is no longer one of those. Dobbins is “a great force within the enthusiast scene and a longtime Volkswagen owner” says VW, and his GTI is “a fascinating amalgamation of different car cultures”.

  • Such as?

The Rocket Bunny widebody kit, most obviously, which hails from Japan. VW says “Dobbins put a lot of effort into making sure that the sheetmetal was honed to eliminate wheel rub, making the car comfortable to drive on a daily basis.”

  • Why the roof-box?

Because sometimes people need to carry things. Although Mr Dobbins needn’t have bothered investing – because he’s ripped out the rear seats and fitted a half-cage, there’s much space in the GTI RS for things. Few people, but many things.

  • Nice seats.

Indeed. So’s the steering wheel. Looks like it can be removed too (like a BAC Mono) because, well, why wouldn’t you need that from your hot hatch. We’ve mixed feeling about Mr Dobbins’ creation. Some of you will hate it, others will think it’s the best thing since someone decided pizza could as easily be delivered as collected. Argue about it in the comments.
