Mercedes SLS AMG roadster: official
Good news! Mercedes has finally sent us some full-frontal pics of the SLS Roadster. And it’s official - we don’t care about its doors’ ungullwingyness anymore. It. Looks. Awesome.
To perform a successful roofectomy, AMG needed to stodge up the aluminum spaceframe chassis. Extra bracing’s been fitted on the sills, a-pillars and behind the dashboard and the seats, too, which has endowed it with 40 more kilos than the coupe.
That’s not messed with the SLS’s alacrity, though – the coupe’s 6.2-litre V8 winds out 563bhp at 6800rpm and 479 lb ft of torque at 4750rpm. It gets from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and top whack’s a barnet-rearranging 197mph, which is exactly the same as the coupe’s.
The new, remodeled scalp’s made from three layers of cloth and incorporates a heated rear glass window. It opens in 11 seconds while you’re driving at up to 31mph and only munches 3-litre’s of the coupe’s 176-litre boot space.
Inside, the door cards and sills have been re-jigged for ungullwingerized doors, there are some rolls hoops and a slot-in Plexiglas air deflector. Otherwise, it’s par for the SLS course.
Want one? It’ll land in showrooms in, erm, the dead of winter. November, to be precise. There’s no UK pricetag just yet, but our chums on the continent have to shell out €195,160 for one, which is £169,208.
What do you think, TopGear.commers? The perfect way to hear that V8 thunderstorm or a watered down gullwing?
