Mercedes E-Class Estate news - E-Class Estate: it's big - 2009

Published: 05 Aug 2009

This is the new Mercedes E-Class Estate and the big news, literally, is the boot. A huge, cavernous, sofa-swallowing boot.

At 1950 litres is will have more load space than any of its rivals when it goes on sale early next year. And, like the outgoing model, it has a party trick - an optional third row of seats that fold flat into the floor, making it a seven-seater. There's even a secret compartment under the boot floor in which to store gimps and other bits and bobs.

It has a more spacious interior than the outgoing model, giving your head and elbows and other bodily extremities some extra space.

And to make sure you don't plough along with the boot weighed down and the bonnet pointing to the sky, the E Estate has automatic self-levelling suspension as standard to keep you nice and horizontal.

Expect the usual array of engines, from an E250 four-cylinder diesel kicking out just 150g/km CO2 to a meaty 5.4-litre V8 with 388bhp.

Let's hope the 6.3-litre AMG version arrives soon. In the meantime, you can read our drive of the saloon version...
