Five reasons to go to the Monterey auction

  • In a few months time, RM Auctions will present a roster of old cars vying for the attention of moneyed motoring enthusiasts.

It's auction time, and we've pulled together five standout reasons why you should head over to California in August...

  • Because they've got an extremely rare, mint condition Ford GT40 up for sale

This particular example - chassis number GT/108 - is the first of only four GT40 roadsters and used extensively as a Ford and Shelby demonstrator. It even featured at the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen in October 1965 when none other than Jim Clark got behind the wheel.

  • To have a closer look at a multi-million pound piece of Bentley history

This is the 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Sports Coupe Cabriolet, a one-off bespoke motor built by Barker on the original 8-Litre chassis, ordered new by Sir Malcolm Stewart. He apparently owned the London Brick Company. Considering there are many bricks in London, we imagine Sir Malc wasn't short of a bob or two.

It's expected to fetch up to £2.78m.

  • Because they've got a Lamborghini Miura SV up for grabs

Yellow. It had to be yellow. As you can see from this gallery, Lamborghini isn't the shy retiring type, and so this ‘terrific example' of the company's groundbreaking supercar is finished in a fitting hue. It's also been the subject of a photo-documented restoration.

Expect it to fetch between £1-1.4 million.

Note: pictures of the actual Lambo SV up for sale aren't available just yet, but it'll look pretty much like the one above. Which is to say, a ruddy bright yellow Lamborghini Miura SV.

  • There is a red Porsche 911 Speedster, and it looks excellent

No more details have been released about this 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Speedster, other than these pictures.

We can tell you that this generation of Speedster - the spiritual successor to the classic 356 - came with an air-cooled 3.2-litre flat six, and was originally offered in two guises: a narrow body or a Turbo-look wide body with flared arches.

But you don't need much info to discern that this 911 Speedster looks entirely brilliant.

  • Steve McQueen's old Ferrari 275 GTB/4 is coming up for sale

Mr McQueen bought this car while filming The Thomas Crown Affair, had it painted Chianti Red, and fitted the Borrani wire wheels from his totalled 275 GTB NART Spider. Because he's Steve McQueen, and he could do things like that.

He later sold it Guy Williams (TV's Zorro from the late 50s/early 60s), after which it went through a number of respected owners. Underneath sits a 3.3-litre V12 packing 300bhp, enough to send the 275 to a top speed of 166mph.

How much do you reckon this one will go for?
