US racer invades Europe. Wins hearts and finishes in 39th place
Well, that was just excellent wasn’t it? The ACO’s decision to allow a NASCAR Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro Cup car to run at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the experimental Garage 56 spot was a huge success.
Driven by Jenson Button, Jimmie Johnson and Mike Rockenfeller, the Chevy spent much of the race ahead of the full GTE-Am class, but drivetrain issues towards the end meant it crossed the line in 39th place overall. Still, it was finishing the full 24 hours that really mattered, particularly in a rain-soaked race where almost half the field were forced to retire.
And we really must talk about the noise. Oh, the noise. Hearing a thundering American V8 plow down the Mulsanne Straight was something to behold, and we think the folk at Hendrick Motorsports might just have won a few new Yoo-ro-pean fans over the weekend. Well done to all involved.
So, to celebrate the success, why not have a flick through the gallery above to check out all the best images of the Next Gen car at Le Mans…
