Land Rover Evoque news - Five-door Evoque revealed - 2010
Land Rover has revealed a five-door version of its pop-tastic Range Rover Evoque. And at first glance, it is completely pointless.
Bear with us. The three-door Evoque is a zeitgeisty manifestation of how our modern world works; utility on the back shelf, looks, style and 'verve' proudly on perma-tanned display. That's why Brand Victoria Beckham and other slebs are busy trafficking its wares across the globe. And, it does at least fulfil the good-looking part.
This new one, however, moves it closer to 'practical'. But Land Rover already makes a Freelander, a Range Rover and Defender. All superbly practical and classy. So where does the five-door Evoque fit?
More of that in a sec. First up, the new Evoque is pretty much identical to the three-door coupe - engines, suspension, lightweight construction et al - but those two extra entrance passages at the back mean it's 30mm taller than the coupe, while rear passengers get 50mm more shoulder room.

Max boot space clocks in at 1,445 litres. Land Rover assures us that 'the five-door Evoque has the same sporting character as the coupe', and will offer up four-wheel drive and the option of two-wheel drive as well.
Prices will start at £30,000, creeping in at just under the asking price of the outgoing BMW X3, but a couple of grand over the base Audi Q5. This, actually, is where it might work. Those two are staid, boring Germanic boxes which tick, erm, the boxes. The five-door Evoque will at least appeal to the family man after a car of this class, who possesses 'heart'. It will hit showrooms in summer 2011, built in Merseyside. Whaddya' reckon?
