Porsche has built a hardcore, track-only Cayman GT4 and we need it
LA Motor Show sees debut of GT4 ‘Clubsport’
Oh yes. Porsche has done the honourable thing and turned the road-going Cayman GT4 into a full-blooded, track-only racing car. Please welcome the new Cayman GT4 ‘Clubsport’.
Revealed at the Los Angeles Motor Show, the new Clubsport features the same Carrera S-derived 3.8-litre flat-six, just like the road-going GT4 – which is a sublime, sublime thing don’t forget – producing the same 380bhp and 310lb ft of torque.
Except here it’s not fed through a manual gearbox, but a six-speed double-clutcher (with paddles on the steering wheel, naturally). The front axle is lifted from the 911 GT3 Cup, as is the lightweight rear strut suspension setup. Throw in a mechanical, locking rear diff and you’ve got yourself something Serious.
There’s more. The steel brake discs measure 380mm all round, working with one-piece, six-piston aluminium fixed calipers up front, and four-piston calipers at the back. The ABS is twelve-way adjustable, while the ESP has been “expanded for slicks”.
It weighs just 1,300kg – a significant 115kg saving over the road-going GT4 – and features a welded-in roll cage, a single racing bucket seat and six-point harness (there's no passenger seat), 18in five-bolt forged alloys and Michelin rubber.
Interested? Thought you might be. If you are a recreational or club racer, Porsche is planning homologation for the VLN, SRO GT4, Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA, Ultra 94 GT3 Cup Challenge Canada and Porsche club races in the States.
