Mazda makes a mini crossover

Published: 28 Oct 2014

If one of the many, many titchy crossovers currently on sale don't quite float your boat, then worry not. Mazda is prepping yet another entrant to the pumped-up supermini category.

This is our first taster of the CX-3, a swoopily styled thing that resembles a Mazda 2 on steroids in this teaser sketch.

There's a big, bold, silver-rimmed grille, some muscular lines and what looks to be five doors. The alloy wheels also look impractically humongous, though the production variant is likely to wear something a little more sensible to lessen your phobia of kerbs.

Based on the 2, expect it to be front-wheel drive and with a range of efficient SkyActiv engines, with 1.5-litre units in petrol and diesel flavours offering up to 115bhp. Being a Mazda, there's a good chance it will come with sweet, tactile controls and a degree of driving satisfaction, too. Very welcome in this part of the market.

We'll know a lot more when it takes its bow at the LA motor show on November 18. If a Juke, Countryman, Mokka, Ecosport or HR-V aren't your thing, perhaps the CX-3 will be.
