A Mercedes Maybach SUV is ‘still an option’
Merc open to the idea of a super-luxury, high-end SUV. Ready your wallets
Talk of future product is always difficult, not least when you’re talking about high-end luxury cars. But Mercedes-Benz has hinted that a luxury Maybach SUV is still on the cards.
“We are looking at all sorts of options,” Matthias Luhrs, global sales chief of Merc, explains to TopGear.com about expanding the Maybach range. “A [Maybach] SUV is still one of them.”
Yup, thought that might have piqued your interest. What with the world’s carmakers throwing their hats into the super luxury SUV ring – Rolls-Royce, Bentley, hell, even Lamborghini – it surely makes sense for Mercedes to use the Maybach brand for a luxo-SUV?
Luhrs notes that “no decision has been made yet” on any potential Maybach-branded SUV, but it’d be a pretty safe bet to assume one would appear. It would join the Pullman S-Class, and the Maybach Cabriolet revealed at this year’s Los Angeles motor show.
Furthermore, when pushed on the idea of a fully electric Maybach SUV – to tie in the recently revealed Mercedes-Benz EQ – he said: “At the moment we’re just looking at the EQ Mercedes brand. Whether we then – on the EQ basis – build a Maybach is too early to say.
“But it might be an option for the next generation,” he added.
In all honesty, a Maybach SUV actually makes a lot of sense, relatively speaking of course…
