Hurrah! Nissan Juke production has begun in Britain

A boost for the British car industry as mk2 Jukes roll out of Sunderland

Published: 10 Oct 2019

There’s a new Nissan Juke. For a rather large proportion of British car buyers, that’s a big deal. And phew! It’s good. “The design is modernised and takes advantage of the stronger stance,” says TG’s Paul Horrell, “yet has lost none of the sheer chutzpah of the old one.”

Also good for us Brits is the fact production of the Juke has stayed on our shores for its second generation. And here it is, the Juke mk2 rolling out of Sunderland and onto every other street corner of the UK.

“Thirty-five years ago, Nissan decided to create a plant in the UK to serve our European markets,” says its European boss Gianluca de Ficchy. “Ten million vehicles later, Sunderland is the biggest UK car plant in history.”

A chunky £100m has been invested in Sunderland to allow Juke mk2 to be constructed there, with 5,000 hours of training provided to train employees up in how to build the things, betraying the fact they’re a big step on from their forebear.

After a somewhat tumultuous few years for car construction in Britain, it’s surely a good news story whether you’re into odd-looking crossovers or not.
