Watch: 306bhp Honda Civic Type R claims five lap records

Hot hatch wars deepen as Honda claims five best laps for FWD hatches. Watch them all

  • Honda has claimed five lap records at five tracks for front-wheel-drive hatchbacks using its 306bhp, Civic Type R. Sounds impressive, no?

We're told the laps were inspired by "the Civic Type R which smashed the front-wheel-drive lap time at the Nürburgring in May 2014". Honda then decided to attack more European circuits to prove the banshee Type R's lap provenance.

Of course, that original Type R time of 7m 50.63 was indeed a lap record. At the time. Earlier this year, Volkswagen managed to squeeze an even faster time out of its GTI Clubsport S, with a new FWD record of 7m 49.21s. The victorious driver, Benny Leuchter, told TG that he had to "push like hell". No kidding.

So, none of the following five laps are from the Nürburgring. They instead come from Silverstone, Spa, Monza, Estoril, and finally, the Hungaroring; not exactly circuits notorious for their FWD lap records.

Still, we have video footage from each of the onboards, and it's definitely worth a few minutes of your time to have a watch. All the attempts were in a standard Civic Type R (not like the one that lapped the 'Ring) with no mechanical mods...
