Video: watch the Golf GTI Clubsport S set a 'Ring record

Fastest ever FWD car to hit the Nürburgring has arrived. Here's how it happened

Published: 04 May 2016

Please be upstanding for Benny Leuchter. This determined chap has just helped Volkswagen claim the record for the fastest ever front-wheel-drive production car to lap the Nürburgring.

And the car he did it in? None other than the most powerful production Golf GTI ever built: the new Clubsport S.

That S gets a more powerful version of the familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, here producing 306bhp, along with a fancy new exhaust system, and a 'Ring mode for the adaptive chassis. Press this button, and it'll transform the GTI into a lap monster.

Like any self-respecting track special, VW has also seen fit to bin the rear seats, the parcel shelf, some of the noise insulation and even the armrests. Well, they were hardly going to be resting with a name like 'Clubsport S', were they?

But you know all of this. What you now want to see is just how Benny Leuchter and this hot Golf managed to carve out an entire second over the already ballistic time set by the new Honda Civic Type R.

Hit play above.
