Opinion: Hands up who melted the rear of the new 2 Series
One TG writer reckons BMW’s design department was so nearly back with a bang
Clearly someone in BMW’s design department held a heat gun up against a clay model of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe for too long, and TG is determined to find out who it was and why they didn’t own up before the final design was signed off. As the old Internet saying goes: “Well it was *bleepin* one of yas.”
Just look at that rear end. How can it look so droopy and melted when the rest of the design, particularly the M240i’s, is so purposeful? The 2 Coupe got its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but each car seemed to be reverse parked suspiciously close to a wall. Make of that what you will…
BMW reckons there are 2002 vibes and both the front and side angles look strong (thank the Lord for standard Kidneys). The proportions are spot on too, with the new Two being lower, longer and wider than before.
Perhaps it’s the rear lights that aren’t doing it for us? They’re mounted fairly low and the kink doesn’t do the shape any favours. There’s a whole lot of black plastic and fake exhaust tip going on back there too, though.
At least that purple is a fantastic colour. BMW is brilliantly calling it ‘Thundernight’ and it’s unique to the new 2 Series Coupe.
