Goodwood Festival of Speed 2009: highlights

Goodwood Festival of Speed 2009: highlights

  • They say Goodwood is a great place to get close to the action. And if you’re this guy, ‘close’ means getting your toes brushed by a drifting NASCAR. This one’s a Chevy Monte Carlo ‘T-Rex’, named after the dinosaur on its roof, which presumably fell off at some point in the powerslide.

  • Here’s last year’s Aston GT1 Le Mans car driven by Darren Turner.

  • This Ferrari 250 GTO is worth a few quid – these things fetch millions at auction. It belongs to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, whose wife drove it up the Hill. Carefully.

  • Mind your eyes – here comes the Jag XKR we showed you last week. It’s in special Goodwood spec and that bright green paint is nicked from the Lambo palette. Jag’s development guru Mike Cross in charge of it all weekend, expertly drifting it up the tricky Hill and pleasing crowds with rolling burnouts. Legend.

  • Mind your eyes #2 – here’s a Focus RS with an antisocial exhaust, driven by a similarly antisocial Top Gear Magazine Art Director.

  • Still, at least he pleased these girls, who wandered out from the woods dressed as cowgirls. Note the large man acting cool.

  • The view from the top paddock, where the cars turn around before blasting back down the Hill again.

  • This season’s Brawn GP F1 car was confined to its tent – any miles on the Hill would be deemed as ‘testing’ by the FIA. Huh?

  • While his car was sleeping, Jenson amused himself by taking a recently-restored Mercedes W25 for a spin. Thankfully he didn’t ding it, as it’s worth about £35 million quid...

  • And here he is again...

  • Unlike Brawn GP, McLaren have cars left over from last season, which they could run up the Hill. Here’s Lewis getting out of his.

  • Say cheese, Lewis. Now dance for us. We said dance, boy!

  • Up on the rally stage, a Lancia does a spot of landscaping.

  • Here’s Sordo in his Citroen C4 WRC car. He kept it out of the ditches.

  • Around 150,000 people watched the action over the weekend. And every single one went home slighter pinker than when they arrived.
