Official: the Geneva Motor Show has been cancelled

Coronavirus cases in Switzerland put a stop to shiny new cars in a big hall

Published: 28 Feb 2020

The 90th Geneva International Motor Show has been cancelled. Yep, just three days before the event was due to open to the media, and with manufacturers lining up new cars to be unveiled throughout next week, the Swiss Government has decided that no events with more than 1,000 people will be allowed to take place until 15 March.

The decision, of course, has been taken to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, with The Independent reporting that the number of confirmed cases in Switzerland has already risen to 15.

According to the event organisers, construction of manufacturers’ stands at the Palexpo convention centre was almost complete.

“We regret this situation, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors' top priority,” said Maurice Turrettini, chairman of the show’s Foundation Board.

“This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision.”

The show was due to be open to the public between 5 and 15 March, but the tens of thousands of tickets sold will now be refunded.
