A car museum is going to celebrate racing games

Good news gamers: the National Motor Museum in Adelaide Hills has secured AUD$125,000 (roughly £63,000) of funding from the Australian government to produce an exhibition about “video gaming and motor culture”.

Dubbed ‘REVolution: where pixels meet motors’, the interactive show will chart the history of titles such as Gran Trak 10, Monaco GP, Mario Kart, Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto to name but a few.

Speaking to The South Australian Lead, museum director Paul Rees explained that his inspiration for the show came from observing his teenage son playing on racing games.

As a result of his ‘Eureka!’ moment, visitors can now look forward to an exhibition that examines the influence of racing on video games and studies how those games have influenced “the modern driving experience.”

And together with tech company Novus Res, the show will also be able to teach school groups simple coding techniques that kids can use to make games of their own.

“The idea is to introduce people to basic computer programming by saying ‘you can whip up a game here in five minutes’ and then allowing them to take that game home somehow,” said Rees.

“I really think this is going to come into its own as an education program working with students,” he continued. “There’s a lot of science technology, engineering and maths that can be taught through video gaming, especially as people want to move into the creative industries.”
