This Defender pedal car costs more than a Dacia Duster
Ridiculously cool miniature, pedal-powered Defender costs £10k and proves spoilt kids have never had it so good
As the Land Rover Defender trundles towards the end of its epic 68-year production run, you can now own one for a mere £10,000. There’s just one problem: your shiny new Defender will be a single-seater powered not with a diesel engine, but by your feet, and designed to fit children up to seven years old. Damn.
Still, there’s no denying this scaled down pedal car – the work of JLR’s SVO division no less – is an object of extreme desire. Wherever possible it stays faithful to the full-size Defender – note skinny but authentically knobbly tyres, mud flaps, faux fuel-filler cap, step-up running bars and sparkly Loire Blue colour - the same paint offered on it bigger brother.
The 1bcp (brake child power) running gear consists of a set of pedals that provide forward and reverse propulsion, along with working brakes, a parking brake and tiny springs at each corner.
Oddly, the interior is plusher than any full-size Defender we’ve ever driven, with real leather-trimmed doors, seat, steering wheel and dash. There’s even a working horn for scaring the dog, and a load bay for carting around a seven year old’s essentials. Don’t show this to the kids, or Christmas could get pricey.
