Brabus has turned the Mercedes-AMG GT S into a 200mph-plus supercar

Small but significant upgrade for Merc’s new supercar means it can now top the double-ton

Published: 11 Sep 2015

Perhaps Brabus was too tired from building an 838bhp G-Wagen. Or perhaps the tuning company is softening us up for an almighty haymaker, because it has just unveiled a tuned Mercedes-AMG GT S supercar, and it’s almost, y’know… understated.

Sure, Brabus’s effort gets a healthy 88bhp increase over the standard AMG GT S, and some additional torque for good measure. But are we alone in thinking they could have gone wilder still?

The ‘standard’ AMG GT S comes with 503bhp and 479lb ft. Thanks to a Brabus ECU that alters the maps for injection and ignition – and a little extra boost for the twin turbos – the 4.0-litre V8 now pushes out 591bhp and 553lb ft of torque.

True, that’s hardly underpowered, exactly. The 0-62mph time drops two tenths to 3.6 seconds, while top speed jumps quite significantly from 193mph to 201mph. Yep, this is a bona-fide, 200mph supercar.

You can option the Brabus sports exhaust, which weighs 40 per cent less than AMG’s own exhaust system, with special valves to disguise the V8’s bark, or indeed, to ramp it up. There’s even a set of sports springs that lower the ride height by 15mm.

Then there’s the new front spoiler, air intake covers, a new rear spoiler and diffuser and forged 21-inch wheels. Step inside, and there are things like carbon scuff plates, stainless steel inserts, lots of leather and the chance to personalise the cockpit.

We’ll see this 591bhp AMG GT S – along with that monster, 838bhp G – at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Which takes your fancy?
