Alex Albon has signed a ‘multi-year contract extension’ with Williams

Rumours of Albon going back to Red Bull were wide of the mark…

Published: 15 May 2024

Alex Albon has secured his future on the F1 grid after signing a contract extension with Williams that’ll keep him at the team for at least the next two seasons.

Williams hasn’t said exactly how long the ‘multi-year’ deal is for, only that Albon would staying past the massive engine and aero regs shake-up that’s happening at the start of 2026.

Albon first joined the team back in 2022 having been ejected from his seat at Red Bull 12 months prior, and although Williams has struggled for pace since then, the 28-year-old has consistently impressed with a string of incredible drives.

In 2023 he was almost single-handedly responsible for the team finishing seventh in the constructors’ championship, and only once has he been outqualified by teammate Logan Sargeant (for the sprint race in Miami two weeks ago, trivia fans).

This is now his second contract extension with Williams, and it ends speculation that he was eyeing up a move to a bigger team: at one stage, rumour had it that a sensational return to Red Bull was on the cards…

“I am incredibly happy to be remaining with Williams Racing and to continue working with such a talented and dedicated team of people,” said Albon. “It has been a difficult start to the year but since joining Williams we have made significant progress together and I have seen the huge changes happening behind the scenes to take us back to the front of the grid.

“This is a long-term project that I really believe in and want to play a key role in which is why I have signed a multi-year contract. The journey will take time but I am confident we are building the right team to move forward and achieve great things in the years to come.”

And team principal James Vowles added: “We are delighted to secure Alex's long-term future with Williams Racing. He has exceptional talent, technical input and dedication to the cause and this is a huge vote of confidence in Williams and the journey back to competitiveness that we are on.

“Since joining, Alex has consistently demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, and signing him for the long-term is a big piece of the puzzle of moving us up the grid."
