Vauxhall reveals the new, barely-different Mokka, with more tech and... no pack options
Vauxhall tweaks its best-selling crossover, but dramatically changes up the sales approach by simplifying the selections to trim, colour and powertrain
Vauxhall’s given its best-selling crossover a new look. The updated Mokka has a refreshed front end and a plethora of new cabin stuff, including improved tech and a new steering wheel.
The Vauxhall Mokka gets the fascia that also features on the updated Frontera. Nothing’s been massively overhauled, just given subtle improvements. There’s a slimmer grille, contrast trim (instead of faux-chrome) and almost imperceptible changes to the headlights and the badge. The trim running the length of the car also changes from chrome to black, which alone makes the Mokka look more upmarket.
There’ll be a choice of petrol, hybrid or fully electric powertrains. The hybrid uses a 137bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine in combination with a 28bhp electric motor and six-speed auto ‘box.
The e-Mokka has a 54kWh battery and 157bhp motor, making it good for up to 250 miles of range officially. The EV gets special aero wheels and a more sculpted bumper to improve aero performance, though the carmaker doesn’t give any numbers on that.
Inside the cabin, the headline change is the steering wheel, flattened at the top and bottom just like, er, the Ferrari F80. Thankfully, Vauxhall’s in-house Common Sense Brigade has seen fit to take some of the buttons out of the digital menu and put them back into the physical world on the brushed silver central control panel – just like those found on the new Grandland.
There are 10in driver display and central infotainment displays. Though the latter is touchscreen, Vauxhall has followed Stellantis strategy to make the thing fully customisable and integrate voice control initiated by ‘Hey Vauxhall’ with ChatGPT enhancements.
As you might expect for a modern motor launching in 2024, there’s wireless smartphone charging, remote updates and a companion app. There’s additional EV route planning if you opt for the fully electric powertrain.
The Mokka will be available in three trim options: Design, GS and Ultimate. This time around, however, Vauxhall has done away with the optional packs. What you get on the trim spec is all you’ll have. As the carmaker puts it, you’ll pick the trim, colour, powertrain, and, er, that’s it. How simple.
