The Vauxhall Adam gets a three-cylinder

As Sunday's Top Gear proved, 1.0-litre, tiny three-cylinder engines are officially a Good Thing.

And it seems Vauxhall agrees, as the Luton firm has revealed details of the dinky three-pot soon to debut in its Adam city car.

Dubbed ‘1.0 Ecotec', the turbocharged all-aluminium engine generates 113bhp (there's an 89bhp version too, but you don't want that) and 122lb ft, making it more horsey and more torquey than the naturally aspirated 1.6-litre it replaces.

In the Adam, it'll officially return 62mpg and emit 99g/km of CO2 - meaning a lovely free tax disc. The three-cylinder Up driven by Jeremy on Sunday does 63mpg but coughs out a sooty 105g/km of CO2

In the Adam, the ‘1.0 Ecotec' shall be mated to a six-speed manual driving the front wheels. Vauxhall promises it's quieter than the outgoing 1.6, with a ‘low-hiss turbocharger' helping keep the decibels down. Lighter, too: dry, the block weighs just 37kg.

It'll be available in the Adam this spring. Would you take a three-cylinder Adam over Jeremy's beloved three-cylinder Up? Or James's equally beloved three-cylinder Sandero?
