New Merc C63 coupe appears – as the old one bows out
Our first teasing glimpse of the new C63 AMG coupe arrives as the Legacy Edition draws a line under its predecessor
This, if our Spidey sense informs us correctly, is a very teasing glimpse of the new Mercedes C63 AMG coupe.
The C63 coupe is important because its arrival will herald a proper BMW M4 rival. The Lexus RC F hasn’t proven to be quite up to the job, while the Audi RS5 is too long in the tooth now. And if our experience of the newly turbocharged C63 saloon is anything to go by, its slinkier sibling ought to fight the BMW’s staple M car better than anything else.
The two-door will likely use the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 as the four-door, with your choice of 470 and 503bhp tunes (tip: more power is better) driving the rear wheels through a paddleshift gearbox. Expect the same multitude of driving modes, too, and an identical 155mph top speed.
We’ll know more before the whole C-Class coupe range appears at the Frankfurt motor show in September. Looks-wise, we expect it to resemble a shrunken S-Class coupe. That’s a good thing.
Less good, depending on your viewpoint, is the departure of the C63’s wonderful old 6.2-litre V8. If you’re quick, though, there is one more chance to find it residing in a C-Class.
Just two caveats: you must like green and live in South Africa. Yup. As the new C63 AMG coupe makes its first appearance, so its forebear bows out via this Legacy Edition, only available in viper green and limited to ten cars. Several of which seem to be sporting a contrasting black rear wing, which we can’t make our minds up about.
What do you reckon: a fitting send-off?
