This is a new DeLorean... from a new DeLorean
Will the real DeLorean please stand up?
Another DeLorean is on its way. No, not another car from DeLorean, an entirely new car company that’s also called DeLorean.
As to which DeLorean – and indeed which owner of a car company called DeLorean – has better claim to the DeLorean name is... well, tricky, given the way everything ended and where the assets went in the aftermath. With that said, actually having ‘DeLorean’ as a surname sure feels like a good start – and that’s before you add in that the aforementioned surname, and indeed given names, were bestowed by John Z. DeLorean himself.
What we’re driving at (with all the pace of a DMC-12) is that this new DeLorean – DeLorean Next Generation Motors, to be precise – is the product of John DeLorean’s daughter, Kat DeLorean.
As for the product itself... well, you’re looking at it. With a pair of gull wing doors – in case anyone forgot what it’s harking back to – the new DeLorean, from the new DeLorean, takes up where the old DeLorean (and the old DeLorean) left off. Yep, we’ve definitely cleared everything up now. Nothing confusing about that at all.
And of course we’re being wilfully obtuse here, just because we can. To clear it up, the new company goes by DNG Motors, and the render you’re looking at is called the Model-JZD. JZD, by the way, stands for John Zachary DeLorean... which means they’re literally spelling out the connection.
As, we feel, does a certain disclaimer on DNG’s website: “NOT AFFILIATED with any other mobility companies using my father’s name,” it says. “They are not associated with the DeLorean family or the original company in any way.”
Indeed, Kat DeLorean has recruited members of the original team behind the DMC-12 and will apparently start building the Model-JZD in Detroit as soon as January 2023.
That, we expect is for prototypes and development mules, given the JZD’s debut is pegged for the end of 2023, and the small matter that we have absolutely no idea about... well, anything up to and including what motivates the car.
As for what motivates the owner? We might have some idea on that score.
