Mountune is readying upgrades for the Ford Focus RS

345bhp not enough for your drift-hatch? Mountune is about to go RS3-hunting...

Published: 03 May 2016

The new Ford Focus RS is not slow. It’s got 345bhp as standard, and if you shift fast enough once the launch control’s done its job, will hit 62mph from standstill in 4.7 seconds. See? Quick.

Mountune however, has expressed a desire to make it even quicker. The tuning outfit, which has had stellar results upping the littler Fiesta ST’s by 37bhp and 22lb ft, has announced a mysterious tune-up for Top Gear’s reigning Car of the Year. We say ‘mysterious’ because although we know what you can buy (beefier, high-flow intake pipework, new air filters, a Quaife differential and even a short-shift kit) there’s no mention of new numbers. Expect more horsepower, and a quicker 0-60mph time.

Mountune says it hasn't divulged top trumps yet because it’s still in the process of signing off all its add-ons at the Nürburgring. The spoilsports. So, in the meantime, we’ll get busy with some speculation.

The Focus RS is already a bargain compared to the likes of the Honda Civic Type R and Audi S3, offering 30-40bhp more for a nigh-on identical £30k price. But could Mountune’s meddling be about to upset the likes of the 362bhp Audi RS3 – or even AMG’s mighty 376bhp A45 ultra-hatch?

Here’s a final piece of food for thought. Mountune already offers a 275bhp version of the regular Focus ST, up 28bhp on the factory output. Is it really so difficult to imagine similar successes with the RS’s engine? Frankly, we haven’t been this apprehensive about a test results day since GCSEs...

While we wait for the final results, have a watch of TG's drag race above, where we pit the RS against its key rivals.
