The campaign to get the Japan-only Lexus GX550 Overtrail starts here
GX special edition is a boxy, luxury off-roader and we need it
Smush the Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen together and you might end up somewhere near this mighty Lexus GX550 Overtrail. Welcome to the new off-roader you didn't know you wanted.
The Overtrail edition takes the GX550’s boxy design and sharp lines and turns the aesthetics up to ‘pah, call that an incline?’.
There’s a chunkier front bumper, mammoth two-tone wheel arches enveloping lightweight 18in rims and tubular side steps. JAOS-fabricated modifications also include an aluminium skid plate, larger mud guards, and even a lift kit with lightweight titanium springs to help you dance the thing out of most tricky situations.
On top, the ‘enhanced capacity’ roof rack carries way more than bags of retro cool, and looks very Eighties when coupled with those square gloss wing mirrors. Underneath, there's a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 good for around 350bhp. Which is enough.
The giant is a collaborative customisation between Lexus and rallying expert JAOS Corporation (hence the use of JAOS parts). Last November, it completed 1,300 miles of the Baja peninsula (California) in the 2023 Baja 1000.
Showcased at Tokyo’s Auto Salon, sadly GX is set for release in Japan. And Japan only. Boo. The campaign to get it over here starts now.
