Ferrari 250 GTO - The $28.5 million Ferrari? - 2008

Published: 18 Sep 2008

Keep this quiet, but we reckon a Ferrari 250 GTO has just been sold for $28.5 million. Which would make it one of the most expensive cars in the world, ever, in the history of selling cars and stuff.

But it's all a bit hush-hush at the mo. Probably because its new owner doesn't want any pesky criminals knowing what he's just parked up in his humidity-controlled secret layer. Sorry, garage. But if the rumourmills are to be believed, then the car is now in English hands, with the V5 safely transferred from a Scottish vendor. Via a Califorian broker. Who probably rinsed a fat load of commission.

Let's just hope it had a full service history, and at least six months T&T. And at that price, you'd hope the dealer would throw in a tank of Optimax and some plush mats, wouldn't you?

If it does prove to be true, it'd make Chris Evans' vintage Fezza look a tad cheap. He forked out £5 million for a 250 GT California Spyder this summer.

But then, only about 39 GTOs are still in existence, and experts reckon it's one of the most desirable Ferraris ever. Experts like us. It was one of the most successful sports-racing cars of the sixties, and competed in the Targa Florio and other exotic road races competed by Italian lotharios and English gents with twirly facial hair.

So it was a very cool car, and still is. Though the 430 Scud probably comes close. Who knows? In fifty years time, someone with way too much cash will be bidding millions of quid for one of those too.

So our advice is this: be an early adopter. Get out there now and buy yourself an F430. In just half a century, you'll get your cash back, plus a few million more to spend on beer or flying shoes or something.
