The GS F is not slow – third gear feels rampant – but the M5 is on another level. Of course, you can’t deploy anywhere near as much firepower for anything like as long as you’d want, but the exponential, expansive thrust the M5 generates is genuinely shocking..."

When the petrol engine first cuts in from cold, it will sound rough by comparison, even if of course it’s a lot more civilised than a diesel. Anyway, once you’re running in normal hybrid mode, the switches between engine-on and engine-off and engine-on again are impressively smooth..."
