Updated Tesla Model S & X get more range
Big Teslas get tech, charging and suspension upgrades
Upgrades announced today for the Tesla Model S saloon and Model X SUV/MPV/spaceship-thing mainly revolve around range. Insofar as you get more of it.
A new “optimised permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor” with silicon carbide power electronics, better lubrication, cooling, bearings, and new gear designs means you get up to ten per cent more range from the same battery. Tesla also says the updates improve power and torque, and thus 0-60 times for its ‘Standard’ and Long Range’ cars, but don’t give numbers.
America’s EPA cycle says the Long Range Model S and X will now do 370 and 325 miles respectively. However it remains to be seen how efficient the updated cars are on Europe’s WLTP cycle. For a bit of context, the Jaguar I-Pace has a WLTP range of 298 miles, and a EPA range of 234 miles. The Audi e-Tron has a WLTP range of 248 miles, and a EPA range of just 204 miles.
Other changes include faster charging - Model S and X can now draw 200kW of charge from Tesla’s V3 Superchargers and 145kW from its V2 Superchargers - and new adaptive suspension. Tesla claims the new setup, which was developed in-house, uses “a predictive model” to “constantly adapt” the damping based on road surface/type, driving style and speed. Various other components - including the tyres and wheel bearings - have also been updated.
Good news for existing owners, too, as those looking to upgrade to a new ‘Performance’ Model S or X will get the Ludicrous Mode upgrade - a £8,700 option - for free.
Ordering is already open, and the first updated cars go into build this week.
