The Tesla Model X just got cheaper

If the 762bhp, 3.2 second-to-sixty ‘Ludicrous’ equipped Tesla Model X was tempting but financially out of reach, there's now a cheaper way to get one. Tesla has announced a new, lower-powered, more affordable option to the range.

It’s called the Tesla Model X ‘60D’, and weighs in at £64,100; by no means chump change, but it is £7,800 less than the current entry-level model, the Tesla Model X 75D.

In the new model, you lose 15kWh of battery oomph which shortens the range from 259 to 220 miles. Luckily, performance hasn’t differed from that model. Thanks to the four-wheel-drive system, 0-60mph is seen off in six seconds flat and you can hit 130mph flat-out. If you want to cut that 0-60mph in half and pulverise your innards in the process, you’ll need to spec the big dog P90D with Ludicrous mode for £30k more. 

However, like its Model S 60D saloon sibling, you should be able to unlock extra go at a later date if you fancy. See, though badged as ‘60’ models, the cars are being built with Tesla’s 75kWh battery pack. An over-the-air software update downloaded by the car (Tesla isn’t saying when, or how much it could cost) will unlock the extra capacity, nudging range and performance up a notch. 

Like all Model Xs, the 60D retains the fabulous ‘Falcon’ gullwing doors that make you the coolest – and most practical – person in the car park.
