Tesla just revealed its cheapest Model S ever

0-62mph in 5.5 seconds and it costs as much as an Audi A4, says Tesla

Published: 09 Jun 2016

This isn’t a completely new Tesla Model S, but the 60 and 60D models are new to the range. And cheaper to own. Possibly cheap enough to keep wannabe Tesla owners happy until the entry-level Model 3 is finished, in fact.

The Model S 60 costs from £53,400, or £57,800 for the AWD 60D. Yes, that looks like an absolute hill of cash, but it’s the cost-per-month maths that’s the big deal.

Leased at £410 a month, Tesla reckons you can now get into a Model S for a similar monthly outlay as a BMW 3-Series or Audi A4. And with lower running costs too, once you factor in the free Supercharger network and lack of complicated internal combustion gubbins on board.

It’s hardly a slowcoach for a My First Tesla – 0-60mph is dusted in 5.5 seconds and it’ll do 130mph. Claimed range is 248 miles. Opt for the all-wheel-drive, dual motor 60D, and that 0-60mph time drops to 5.2s.

Plus, you’ll be able to unlock extra go at a later date if you fancy. See, though badged as ‘60’ models, the cars are being built with Tesla’s 75kWh battery pack. An over-the-air software update downloaded by the car (Tesla isn’t saying when, or how much it could cost) will unlock the extra capacity, bumping range and performance up a notch. That’s new-school tuning for you.

So, is four hundred quid a month the dream ticket to Tesla ownership, or would you stick with the tried-and-tested Germans?
