This Porsche Taycan just did 103mph INDOORS

Bloodhound’s assault on the outright land speed record might be in jeopardy, but there are still plenty of lesser speed records out there that are ripe for the breaking. Take the record for the fastest speed reached…indoors, which Porsche and American GT racer Leh Keen have just obliterated.

Keen hit 102.6mph in a Taycan Turbo S in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Centre in New Orleans, Louisiana, beating the 86.99mph record set by Mikko Hirvonen in 2013. Rules stipulated by Guinness meant Keen had to start from and brake to a standstill, all within the confines of the building, for the attempt to count. He could have no run up, nor could he aim for an open door. If Keen outbraked himself he would simply punch a Porsche-shaped hole in the convention centre’s far wall.

The Taycan, though big and heavy, is mighty off the line. Porsche conservatively claims 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds for the stock Turbo S as used by Keen for the record attempt. Just as important – the brakes. The Turbo S gets massive carbon ceramics as standard. As an added precaution, Porsche pre-heated the stock tyres for max grip.

The Ernest N. Morial Convention Centre is the biggest contiguous exhibition hall in the States, with over one million square feet of space. But its floor is polished concrete. “The surface is so unpredictable, so slick, that you have to have complete trust in your car. It truly was like ice – and you’re accelerating flat out, facing a really hard wall at the end. Suddenly, even in a massive space like the one we had, it seems very small,” said Keen, after the record attempt.
