Porsche is celebrating Back to the Future day in fabulous style

A Taycan Turbo S, a DeLorean and a whole lotta chargers feed some only slightly tenuous October 21 marketing

Tenuous? Maybe a little. But who are we to knock Porsche jumping on the opportunity to make the most of Back to the Future day?

Yep, it’s 21 October once again (doesn’t it come round quicker every year, etc) and a prime chance to learn just how much a Taycan Turbo S has in common with a DeLorean.

Only one has stainless steel bodywork, and only one has 761bhp channelled through all four wheels for a 2.8sec 0-62mph time.

Nope, the similarity is that both can claim to harness 1.21 gigawatts of power. It’s how much electricity the DeLorean time machine needs to shoot wantonly backwards and forwards in history, and comes courtesy of a plutonium-fuelled nuclear reactor.

And it’s how much electricity Porsche has calculated North America and Europe’s combined Electrify and Ionity charging networks (comprising almost 5,000 chargers) can squeeze into a Taycan EV. Well, a number of Taycans. Though we’d expect an electric saloon car would travel through considerably more than 'time' if you attempted squeezing all 1.21 gigawatts into just one…
