The Polestar 2 will cost fifty grand

Production of the 402bhp Swedish EV starts early next year

Published: 03 Oct 2019

The Polestar 2 will cost £49,900 when it’s launched next year. That’s £2,900 more than the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, and £2,100 less than the Model 3 Performance.

In case you need reminding, the 2 is an all-electric, 4WD, five-door saloon-shaped ‘fastback’ from Volvo’s standalone future-tech/luxury off-shoot. The company’s first car - the 1, obviously - is a 600bhp plug-in hybrid grand tourer costing £140K. It’s a proper bit of kit, and really rather good. Read all about it by clicking on these words

So hopes are high for the 2, the company’s first all-electric car. It’s not all about numbers, of course, but here they are anyway: the 2 claims a 311-mile range from its 78kWh battery, the equivalent of 402bhp and a 0-62mph time of less than five seconds. Meanwhile its arch rival, the Long Range Model 3, claims a 348-mile range and 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds.

You can order one now directly from Polestar, with a refundable £1,000 deposit reserving your spot in the queue. Production will begin early next year, and cars will be delivered in the summer. Early cars will be richly specified with a trick Android Automotive OS-powered infotainment system (a world first), all manner of driver aids, Fancy LED headlights and a big panoramic sunroof, among other things. Your first three years of servicing and maintenance are thrown in too.

A cheaper Polestar 2 will be along in due course, as will an all-electric ‘performance SUV’ called the (you guessed it…) Polestar 3.
