The MPV comeback continues: this is the surprisingly cool Zeekr Mix
Chinese EV firm unveils its fifth car – a properly boxy MPV that could make it to Europe
Yes, that's right, what you see above is indeed another new MPV - the new Zeekr Mix – continuing the case that this much-adored bodystyle should make a comeback.
It's the fifth production car from the fancy, all-electric Geely sub-brand, and it's surprisingly cool, sporting a big, boxy, two-tone design. More the pity, then, Zeekr has only released a single picture after the car’s unveiling at the Auto China 2024 show in Beijing.
Still, we know the Mix will be the first car based on Geely’s SEA-M platform and rumour has it there’s a single motor that makes around 420bhp. Should be plenty to move what is described as an "intelligent living room on wheels".
Zeekr said the new platform (which comes after a £772m investment) allows for flat floors, a super long wheelbase, a hidden B-pillar and huge amounts of interior space. Which of course would be nice to see.
In the absence of imagery, Zeekr said there'll be infotainment screens for both the driver and the passengers, and there’s talk of multiple seating setups to carry up to six people. Oh, and there’s a funky mismatched door setup too with a regular driver’s door plus a sliding rear door on one side, and two sliding doors on the other side that peel away from each other to create a giant opening.
Overall, the Mix is 4.7m long, meaning it should take up roughly the same footprint as a BMW 3 Series. Interestingly though, Zeekr reckons the SEA-M architecture allows for a tiny turning radius of less than five metres thanks to its steer-by-wire capabilities.
Plus, this thing could actually make it to the UK. Okay, there’s no official confirmation just yet, but Zeekr is already selling the 001 shooting brake and the X crossover in Europe with possible plans to bring them to our shores at some point in the future. So, perhaps the proper multi-purpose vehicle is about to make that comeback?
