The Jaguar I-Pace is now a Munich minicab
Munich's Merc E-Class taxis face fully electric threat from Britain
Iconic taxis of the world: the London black cab, the New York yellow taxi and the Munich cream E-Class. Seriously: try flying into Munich and not getting into a medium-sized Merc saloon painted in the city’s signature off-white hue.
Clearly it’s something that’s riled Jaguar, and it’s just sent ten I-Paces to be beiged-up and put into Munich minicab service.
Will the plug-in SUV takeover completely? Probably not. It costs twice as much as an E-Class and, when it comes to those airport runs, will prove a little more limited in the distances it can travel. A full day’s work might be just out of reach of the car’s real-world 200-mile range, especially with people, bags and some cranked-up air con. Unless its driver can find a fast charger on their lunch break.
Munich’s powers-that-be are keen to help out, though, and will apparently contribute 20 cents (about 18p) to every kilometre an electric taxi travels, in an effort to clean up the city’s air. So in the British takeover of German streets, we might be getting a helping hand…
