Here’s your first sneaky look at Volvo’s all-electric Tesla Model Y rival
Volvo gave us a very quick glimpse of the EX60 during the reveal of the ES90 saloon
When Volvo first announced the ES90 saloon, it also confirmed it was working on an all-electric version of the XC60 crossover. It was to be known as, you guessed it, the EX60.
And now the ES90 has been officially unveiled to the world, we’ve also been given a very quick glimpse of the EX60. Yep, blink and you’ll miss it, but Volvo snuck a sneak preview of the EX60’s behind into its ES90 online reveal video. Skip to just before the 25-minute mark in the video below for a quick glance. Or you could just stare at the screenshot above, because that’s all you’re getting for now.
It looks… rather like a shrunken version of the seven-seat EX90. Although we can see the rear lights will probably be more closely aligned with the smaller EX30’s. Makes sense. Forget the older EX40 for a moment, this is a car designed to sit between the EX30 and EX90.
As a medium-sized electric crossover, Volvo will be hoping the EX60 sells in big numbers too. Best get it right, because it’ll be up against big hitters like the Tesla Model Y, Polestar 2, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and many, many more.
We already know the EX60 will be the first car that Volvo builds on its next-gen SPA3 platform, although there’s no word on what that means for battery sizes or motor outputs just yet. We also know Volvo created something called a ‘Superset tech stack’ for the EX90. This is described as being like a set of building blocks, with all subsequent Volvo EVs using the same fundamental core of systems, software and hardware. Volvo is then able to cherry-pick the most important bits for each size and shape of car.
Thoughts on an ideal battery size/range figure for the EX60?
