The GMC Sierra EV has 754bhp and *might* do 400 miles on a charge

GMC has unveiled its third all-electric truck in what it describes as a ‘turning point for the premium truck brand’. Say hello to the first-ever Sierra EV.

It follows the giant Hummer EV pickup and slightly-less-giant Hummer EV SUV in GMC’s switch to making electric trucks, and the range will be led by a special Denali Edition 1 that should arrive on US roads in early 2024. 

The Denali Edition will be fully-loaded, with GMC reckoning on 400 miles of range from an as-yet-unspecified (but presumably massive) battery. Like the Hummers and Chevrolet’s Silverado EV, the Sierra EV will be based on GM’s Ultium platform, with two motors providing a maximum of 754bhp and 785lb ft of torque. We’re assured that different trims and lesser-powered versions will arrive later on. 

The Denali gets the full 800 volt architecture meaning it can charge at speeds of up to 350kW, while something called the ‘Onboard Power Station Pro’ provides 10.2kW of power for plugging in up to 10 different outlets. Imagine the setup you could bring camping – no need to leave the oven at home. Heck, bring the telly and the games console if you like. 

There’s plenty more to talk about too, with a massive 16.8-inch touchscreen inside and GM’s Super Cruise ‘hands-free’ driver assistance too. A Max Power mode allows a bonkers 0-60mph sprint in 4.5 seconds and adaptive air suspension can raise or lower the Sierra by up to 5cm. Oh, and it’ll follow the Hummer pickup in getting four-wheel steer with a weird sideways crab-walk option. 

GMC says the launch-spec Denali will be able to tow up to 4,309kg and it’ll get a payload of almost 600kg. There’s a massive frunk up front too.

Prices for the Denali will start at a not-insignificant $107,000, but future models should bring the entry price down to around $50,000 in time. So, what do we think?
