The fully-electric MG ZS will only cost £21,500

Need a bargain entry point into EVs? MG has the answer

Published: 17 Jul 2019

When TG first drove the MG ZS - the compact crossover charged with doubling MG’s sales - we concluded that while it was very practical and well-priced, its automatic gearbox and old-school engines made it a bit of a nightmare to drive.

Thankfully, the new ZS won’t have either of those problems, because this one is fully-electric. It’s properly cheap for an EV too. For the first 1,000 ZS EV customers, MG will match the UK government’s £3,500 grant, meaning you’ll pay just £21,495 – and you’ll get a home charger installed for free too.

That makes the MG over £4,000 less than the cheapest Hyundai Kona EV.

MG claims that this is the “first truly affordable, family friendly electric car". The company has also thrown in a seven-year warranty that includes the lithium-ion battery.

That battery is a water-cooled 44.5kWh unit which provides 163 miles of range. Hardly ground-breaking, but more than enough for day-to-day family life. Power sits at 141bhp and 260lb ft which, again, should be plenty.

Inside there’s an eight-inch touchscreen with sat nav, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and DAB radio. Plus, you’ll also get MG’s Pilot system with features like blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control.

It may not set the world alight, but could the MG ZS EV become the new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV? We’ll find out when deliveries begin in September this year.
