Ford’s SuperVan 4.2 has set a load of lap records at Mount Panorama

2,000bhp electric Transit rocks up to the Bathurst 500 and sets a blistering lap time

Published: 28 Feb 2024

Romain Dumas is no stranger to extremely quick electric cars. Heck, the Frenchman set records at Pikes Peak, Goodwood and the Nürburgring in the bonkers Volkswagen ID.R. And yet, as once demonstrated by the wonderful Sabine Schmitz, the real test is whether he can do that in a van.

Hang on, he can? Oh blast. Turns out Dumas has just set a number of lap records at Mount Panorama including quickest closed-wheel vehicle (beating a derestricted Mercedes-AMG GT3 car), quickest electric vehicle and quickest commercial vehicle around the 3.86-mile circuit in Australia.

This wasn’t just any van though, it was a Marks & Spencer delivery van. Just kidding – it was Ford’s SuperVan 4.2 complete with three electric motors, 2,000bhp and some incredible looking aero.

Dumas set a time of 1m 56.32s during the Bathurst 500 event and apparently hit a top speed of over 186mph (300kph) on the Mountain and Conrod straights. This thing isn’t your everyday Transit.

“This is the first time I have driven SuperVan 4.2 faster than 300kph, and we left nothing on the table as we pushed for the fastest lap possible,” said Dumas. “No one has ever driven a vehicle like SuperVan 4.2 around Mount Panorama, and certainly not this quickly.”
