The Citroen Ami is coming to the UK in 2022!

Citroen has confirmed that the fully electric Ami will launch in the UK next year, and one suspects it might not be able to build them fast enough.

Especially when they look as adorable as the Ami does. Citroen’s electric mobility pod has already had more than 12,000 people in the UK register their interest, and when the reservation system goes live on 27 September, it might just melt Citroen’s servers.

Prices? Citroen has yet to confirm the full price for the two-seater city… thing, but you can secure one with a £250 refundable reservation fee. What you get for your money – apart from those adorable looks – is a fully electric quadricycle with seating for two that’ll tango under current and future congestion and ULEZ restrictions.

There’s a 5.5kWh battery – bigger batteries have been found in iPhones, you might jest – that provides up to 46 miles of range and a top speed of [drumroll] 28mph. Still faster than your average supercar attempting a cross-London jaunt, one might accurately surmise.

It’s just 2.41m long and features an “incredibly tight” turning circle, while inside… well, there is one, and it’s not complicated. A steering wheel. Pedals. Seats. A manual handbrake. Plus, three buttons: one for the fan, one for the rear windscreen and one for the hazards.

There’s a USB port and dock for your phone, and a wee dram of space. In a nod to the 2CV – which Citroen definitely isn’t interested in remaking, btw – are manual side windows that can be flipped upwards.

“The time of petrolheads is progressively over,” Citroen boss Vincent Cobée told TopGear.com recently, “but the role of individual mobility in society is going to become more important for other dimensions than speed and cornering abilities. Citroen needs to stand out, not as this quirky brand that does things that sometime become successes, but a brand that has a social opinion, that is militant and hopefully can bring answers to the problems that we will have very soon.

“We don’t feel obliged to repeat what we’ve done in the past. We don’t do different generations of the same profile. We answer the evolving situation of the similar need. Ami is what Citroen’s mindset can bring trying to address the problem of urban affordable mobility,” he said.

Citroen’s UK boss Eurig Drice added: “The Ami will provide a mobility solution in a very unique package that is fun, exciting and accessible for all.”
