Alfa Romeo’s electric Junior is cheaper than a Jeep Avenger, yours from £33,895

Alfa’s all-electric Junior is also cheaper and more generously kitted than a Peugeot e-2008

Published: 06 Jun 2024

Prices for the Alfa Romeo Junior will start from £33,895. Alfa's first (partially stumbled) step into the fully electric world appears to tread on its siblings’ toes because, get this, it’s cheaper than the Peugeot e-2008 and the electric Jeep Avenger. And the Junior has more kit, too.

Let’s look at the differences: built on the same platform  – along with the Fiat 600e and Vauxhall Mokka –  the Junior is available in three trim levels, all with a 54kWh battery. The entry-level Elettrica, with that sub-£34k price tag, gets a 154bhp motor good for up to 250 miles of range. That's over a grand cheaper than an entry-level Avenger 'Longitude' (£34,999).

An entry-level Peugeot e-2008 meanwhile, costs £35,700. Yet for a fiver under the Pug's price, you can move into second of the Junior's trims - dubbed 'Speciale' – which also features the same 154bhp e-motor set-up for £35,695. A whole fiver? Mon dieu! But wait, there’s more.

Because the Speciale includes a sportier bodykit, 18in alloys, rear privacy glass, and a massaging driver’s seat – the latter a £500 option in Peugeot’s price book.

Then comes the range-topping Junior 'Veloce', tuned to deliver a punchier 237bhp in exchange for slightly diminished range (215 miles). That'll cost you £42,295. JEV's extra £8,400 gets you a Torsen diff, lowered suspension and beefier calipers behind 20in diamond-cut alloys. There's also liberal use of real cow in the cabin and sportier pedals. Fancy.

The Junior supports 100kW rapid charging across the range, meaning you can chuckle your way through a full episode of Fleabag and get 10-80 per cent juice back in the cells.

Orders will begin later in June. In the meantime, swot up on the Junior's background. Once upon a time, this car started life as 'the Milano'...
