AC Cars has built an all-electric 304bhp Cobra

Limited edition Cobra gets 1960s looks with an ultra-modern powertrain

Published: 01 Jul 2020

Well, here’s something we didn’t expect to see today. The modern-day iteration of AC Cars is bringing the iconic Cobra kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, with a limited run of all-electric iterations.

Yep, you heard that right. What you see above is the Series 1 electric – designed to look exactly like the first generation of Cobra built in 1962, but with a 230kW (304bhp) electric motor and 54kWh battery pack under that composite body.

Just 58 will be built and, to keep things original, the chassis is still a ladder frame with just a couple of amendments to fit the electrical bits. The interior will also be traditional, but the steering, brakes and suspension have all been updated.

Stats? Well, it’ll go from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds, manage 150 miles of range on a single charge and weighs under 1,250kg. Sounds promising, but then it should be given the price… £138,000. Ouch.

If you fancy something a little less financially crippling, AC has also fitted exactly the same style of Cobra with the 2.3-litre, 350bhp EcoBoost four-cylinder from the Ford Mustang. Known as the Charter Edition, a further 58 will be built and each will cost around £85,000. Bargain.
