Excitable rumours were no doubt muted by a healthy dose of car industry cynicism; there were to be no surprises at this year's Detroit Motor Show, especially not a brand new supercar from Ford.
And yet, Ford only went and announced the brand new GT; a 600bhp mid-engined supercar packing enough motorsport smarts to make your face hurt. It also looks bloody amazing, too. Combine that with the Shelby GT350R - a car that packs the most powerful N/A Ford engine ever - and it was clear who had pretty much won Detroit.
Of course, there was more on offer at the show, not least because Honda has finally, finally shown us the, um, final production version of the NSX that we're still hoping we'll see in this lifetime.
Then of course, we saw the roofless Alfa 4C and yet another 911 variant. Oh, and only the fastest ever Porsche Cayenne in history.
So, here are all the cars worth talking about from the year's first motor show. Pick a favourite, and comment responsibly below. And keep checking back as we'll be updating the gallery throughout the day.
2015 is going to be quite fast, isn't it?

"There is also a launch function that gives the NSX ‘zero delay' performance from rest. This is said to be bordering on frightening, according to one spokesperson. The benchmarks were the Tesla Model S and the Nissan GT-R. The new NSX beats both of those comfortably, they say..."
Ford GT
"Gone is the supercharged V8 of old, replaced by an Ecoboost engine. Fear not, though, as it still packs a proper amount of cylinders. A twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine drives the rear wheels with ‘more than' 600bhp..."

"The Cayenne S was let loose round the Green Hell late last year and came home with a Nurburgring lap time of 7min 59.74sec. That's over 14 seconds quicker than the really, really rapid Range Rover and makes the 'S' the first SUV to limbo under the Nordschleife's eight minute barrier..."
Shelby Mustang GT350R
"Producing north of 500bhp and 400lb ft (Ford still won't be drawn on more precise numbers), the 5.2-litre is the company's first flat-plane crank V8. It's the kind of setup you'd normally find on machinery more expensive and exotic than a traditional-recipe muscle car..."
Hyundai Santa Cruz concept
"Highlights? Try centre-locking alloys, like a 911 GT3. Suicide doors, last seen on a Rolls Royce and Mazda RX8 (we're ignoring the Vauxhall Meriva). And plenty of Stabilo yellow highlights, including the calipers of the Brembo brakes..."
Alfa Romeo 4C Spider
"The obvious thing to note is the lack of lid. There's no complex retractable folding hard top here. At first the car will only be available with a soft, stowable canvas. However an optional carbon fibre hard-top will be available to the UK when sales begin later this year..."

"The 911 Targa 4 GTS (to give it its full name) is the 20th permutation of Porsche's legendary rear-engined sports car. However, this GTS isn't occupying the same sweet spot as its Coupe and Cabrio brethren - the meat in the Carrera S and GT3 sandwich - as, unfortunately, the Targa is only available with four-wheel-drive..."
Ford F-150 Raptor
"The Raptor is a handy 500lbs lighter than before too, thanks to a ‘high strength, military grade aluminium body', there's a new Terrain Management System (you select according to what's happening outside - snow, mud, zombie apocalypse etc), and new suspension..."

"The Bolt's range would be 200 miles, it's got room for a family, yet its price would be $30,000 after the electric grant. Of course $30k in the US usually translates unfairly as £30k over here, but even so it's a lot cheaper than a Tesla and has far more range than an i3. That's despite the Bolt using fairly exotic materials: carbon fibre, magnesium and aluminium..."
Infiniti Q60 concept
"There's Infiniti's drive-by-wire steering tech as seen on the Q50 saloon (on which the production Q60 will be based), a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 mounted up front, powering all four wheels, and a seven-speed automatic gearbox..."
Mercedes-Benz GLE 63 AMG
"As is the way in AMG-land these days, there are two versions. A ‘base' AMG comes with a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine churning out 549bhp and 516lb ft, enough to ensure it hits 62mph in a no doubt G-force-rich 4.3 seconds..."
Lexus GS F
"Powering the GS F's rear wheels is the 467bhp 5-litre V8 you'll find in the RC F coupe. Unlike either of those M cars - nor any current or upcoming Mercedes AMG saloon - it's naturally aspirated..."
Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE
"It's called the Cross Coupe GTE. The designers say it's a big clue to the detail design of the Crossblue seven-seater, though it has a lowered roof and a five-seat coupe-ish silhouette. Its very likely the Coupe itself will go into production a couple of years after the seven-seater..."
Audi Q7
"Sure, you're not going to make many friends at Greenpeace weaving a two-tonne full-size Audi SUV three inches from the rear bumper of the car in front, but the Q7 looks functional at least in comparison to the monstrous current version. We're told this new generation is 37mm shorter and 15mm narrower than before, with an additional 21mm between the first and second row of seats. Smaller footprint, more space inside..."
Mini John Cooper Works
"This is the most powerful Mini of all time. Ever. The JCW laughs in the face of the 189bhp Cooper S, boasting a full 228bhp from its tweaked 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. To save you the Top Trumps bother, that's a fraction more than the VW Golf GTI Performance Pack from a whole class above. The mighty Mini also matches the Audi S1 for poke..."
Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG Sport
"‘AMG Sport' will sit just below the proper AMG stuff - the mentalist, tyre-melting ones we rather like here at TG - and just above the simple AMG Sport spec cars. What you get is a C-Class 'geared towards the C63', with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine producing a healthy 367bhp and 383lb ft of torque, a seven-speed gearbox, 4MATIC all-wheel-drive and AMG's three-stage 'Ride Control' sports suspension..."
Volvo S60 Cross Country
"Brace yourselves: here's more proof that carmakers believe no car can't be improved with a dollop of extra ride height and some ‘off-roader' shtick. Meet the world's first saloon crossover: the Volvo S60 Cross Country..."
BMW M6 Coupe
"Keen observers may've noticed the front bumper has been slightly revised and full-LED headlights sit above it. While at the rear a chrome bumper insert has been slapped on and the exhausts are slightly bigger. Keen Internet-smiths may also have noticed that the iconic BMW kidney grille now features nine slats where previously it had ten. Revolutionary changes, you'll agree..."
BMW 3.0 CSL
So it's not a new model, but who really cares? BMW brought along a highly regarded family member to the Detroit Motor Show party, and with pedigree like this classic beaut', who can begrudge them?
Ford F-100 Abatti 'Hay Hauler'
Yes, Ford is busy showing off the new F-150 Raptor, but this F-100 has to be one of the coolest pick-ups we've seen.
Ford GT40
The new, 2015 Ford GT comes from a very distinguished family. Notably, this one.
Local Motors
Yep, that's the chaps from Local Motors 3D PRINTING A CAR.
Maserati Alfieri
It's the Alfieri, now confirmed for production. Wait, are you even reading these words or just ogling the picture above? Yeah, we thought so, in which case, QWERTYUIOP.
Mercedes-Benz F015
Merc's self-driving concept from last week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has made the trip to Detroit, to wow show goers with its amazing technology.
Nissan Titan XD
It's the Nissan Titan XD!
Toyota FT-1
Fittingly, Toyota brought along its surprise from last year's Detroit Motor Show, the stunning FT-1 supercar. Welcome back, old friend.
Cadillac CTS-V
"Power comes from a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine. The one you'll find in the Corvette Z06, no less. Here it's a little down on power, but alongside its SLS Black-trumping power figure comes 630lb ft of torque. It's the most powerful Caddy ever made..."
Lexus RC F GT3
"The Japanese have decided to go head-to-head against the posh brands in European GT3 racing. Then, in 2016, the RC F GT3 will also race in the US, though they're not yet saying which series it'll join. They're not saying much about the tech of the car, beyond that it has a V8. It's all very early in the process..."
Honda FCV
We first saw a version of this car last year, but here's the evolution: there are some exterior and interior tweaks, with a more spacious cabin, a driving range over 300 miles, a smaller fuel cell stack (with a greater power density too) and an expected Japanese launch in March 2016.
