An electric Infiniti crossover is coming to Detroit

Shady pic previews "beginning of a new era" for luxury Japanese brand

Published: 17 Dec 2018

Infiniti likes a concept. And for the most part, we like Infiniti’s concepts. It’s just a shame they don’t tend to translate especially well into actual production cars. But perhaps that’s about to change, thanks to this – a fully-electric crossover thing that’s coming to January’s Detroit Motor Show.

The Thing (doesn’t have a name yet, so we’re going with Thing) heralds “the beginning of a new era for Infiniti, and an illustration of where we want to go with the brand”, says design boss Karim Habib. And where they want to go, is electric. In January Infiniti announced plans to electrify all its cars beginning in 2021 – the Thing ought to give us some idea of what these new electrified Infinitis will look like.

The company says “the advent of electrified platforms heralds a fresh approach to what crossover and saloon platforms look like, both inside and out”. It says “electrification gifts interior space, enabling spacious and lounge-like interiors, rich in welcoming and assistive technologies”. So – expect a sumptuous, lounge-y interior and much autonomy. And lots of curves because, ya know, Infiniti.

The concept supposedly takes design cues from the Q Inspiration and Prototype 10 concepts (the latter of which was shown at Pebble earlier this year). Has this dark teaser shot got you all excited for an electric Infiniti?
