Watch the moment a Ford GT crashed at Spa’s Eau Rouge
World famous car meets world famous corner. Carnage ensues
Stefan Mucke will be thanking his lucky stars for modern safety standards this week. The German driver was approaching the final stages of the Six Hours of Spa on Saturday when he suffered a suspected puncture entering Eau Rouge; one of the fastest and most feared corners in motorsport.
It couldn’t have happened at a worse place on the track. The loss of grip sent the Ford GT into a spin, striking the tyre wall with such force that the impact ripped the entire front end and one of the doors off the car.
Fortunately there was no one following right behind the #66 GTE Pro racer, giving marshals just enough time to get the yellow flags out and warn others of the danger lying in wait in the middle of the circuit.
“Everything is okay,” said Mucke, after he’d undergone precautionary checks at a local hospital. “I feel okay and it is good to know we have a strong car. Thank you to the team for building me a safe car.”
Meanwhile, Team Principal George Howard-Chapell said it was “fabulous to get second place” in the other GT of Marino Franchitti, Andy Priaulx and Harry Tincknell, although naturally the welfare of his hospitalised driver was the main worry.
“The most important thing is that Stefan is okay,” said the boss. “Typically, he is more concerned with the car than himself. We need to look at the data to find out what happened but at the moment we suspect it was a puncture.”
